Chinese Astilbe

Astilbe chinensis 'Mighty® Red Quin' PP024797

Clumps of fern-like foliage with upright, plume-like flower stalks.

Astilbe are a popular choice for shady gardens, where they perform well if given a rich, moist soil and regular watering. This new introduction is similar to Astilbe Mighty Pip in that it is tall reaching up to 1.2m (4 ft) but features showy, upright, red plumes over boldly divided dark green leaves that may have bronze edging. Robust grower. Will re-bloom if plants are cut back. Excellent in containers, as a cut flower and for the back of the border. Seed heads may be removed, or left on the plant for winter interest.

Greenhouse Growing Instructions:

Begin at 55-60° F until new growth appears. Moisture is key for optimal growth so keep evenly moist, never allow to dry. Once actively growing temperature can be increased to initiate flowering, and begin feeding at 75-125 ppm N with each watering. Provide 50% shade to avoid leaf scorch. Plants generally finish in 8-10 weeks based on growing conditions.

Homeowner Planting and Maintenance Tips:

Easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Follow a watering schedule for first growing season to establish your plant. Can divide clumps every 3-5 years in early spring if desired.
