Peonies (Intersectional Peonies)
Intersectional Peonies are hybrids between woody tree Peonies and herbaceous garden peonies. These hybrids are relatively new creations, with the first successful Intersectional crosses being made in 1948. Sometimes these special plants are called “Itoh Peonies” after the Japanese man who created the first Intersectional hybrid, Mr. Toichi Itoh. Other peony hybridizers are carrying on the work of his discovery.
Intersectional peonies are very easy to grow in full to part sun with well drained soil. The only trick is to make sure the crown is planted 1 to 2 inches deep, no deeper! If peonies are planted too deep, they may not bloom. We recommend to plant them into a 2 to 3 gallon in the spring or fall for following year sales.
